This project is located in Burlington, between a park and a conservation area, with views to Lake Ontario. The client, Joseph Brant Memorial Hospital, wished to create a permanent home for their extended care facilities, which offer physical, recreational and occupational therapy to the elderly.

The designed structure offers a dynamic play of light and an open buoyant space. Views in and through the building extend and connect the interior space with its beautiful surroundings. Natural materials promote a healthy environment and connect the building to its setting.

The initial gesture of the building was to extend a beautiful existing stone wall on the west limit of the site along the length of the site. Along that stone wall a plinth was created which forms the floor of the building and cantilevers out toward the conservation area. A broad and sheltering roof ‘floats’ over the plinth. Structured in Douglas fir beams, and decking, the roof allows views and light as well as a secure and sheltered home for the elderly.
