This Renovation of a 120-year-old
Cabbage town home, dramatically mixes old and new
features to create a warm light filled contemporary
home.
The best characteristics of the
Victorian past were retained and integrated into
a truly modern living environment. A central brick
fireplace serves as a focal point and graces the
space with its antique charm. In the corner of the
room is the original wooden staircase. Ten-foot
tall ceilings, stained glass windows and large reclaimed
baseboards speak to the home’s past.
One is struck by the amount of light
inside. Walls were removed to open up the interior,
creating a large living and kitchen area. Custom-made
walnut kitchen cabinetry with stainless steel countertop
and sink serves as a perfect backdrop for entertaining.
Beyond the kitchen, a solarium from a past renovation
is retained as a casual eating area and fills the
kitchen with natural light. A second staircase was
removed, however the opening to the second floor
was kept. This light well in the kitchen adds a
dramatic use of natural light from an unexpected
source. Pot lighting was installed throughout and
accentuates the modernity of the space
Upstairs, modern design shifts into
higher gear. The aluminium angle baseboards and
cork flooring are striking. The wall adjacent the
removed staircase is made of glass planks, flooding
the master bedroom with soft light. The ensuite
and bathroom, created from one original bathroom,
are also separated with glass plank, creating a
play of light and shadow
A dormer was installed on the third
floor to enlarge the space and perfectly balances
the solarium on the ground floor. It provides a
walkout to the rooftop deck that looks out east
over Cabbagetown. |
