This
home, for a couple with small children, is set on
a hillside in a northern landscape. Responding to
its setting and its inhabitants, the house is a
carefully developed sequence of spaces and views
of the landscape.
The design exploits the geometric interplay of
two centres, which form and limit the building.
The entwined geometry creates curving spaces as
well as curving shapes. Movement through the house
is radial. There is a sense of discovery and surprise,
as well as openness and space. Approaching the building
from the north, one encounters tight solid forms
which are separated by thin openings, offering glimpses
into and through the building. Moving into and through
the house its solidity transforms into curved spacious
volumes leading upward and outward, offering sunlight
and dramatic views. Vertical movement within the
central space leads to the second floor bedrooms
and the third floor conservatory, overlooking the
valley and city below. |
