This
retreat is located on a sandy beach that slopes
south to the water with views to the east and the
west. To take full advantage of this ideal tropical
site and to enhance the romance and allure of the
ocean, we conceived of the pavilion as a boat on
land.
An open, light, tightly rigged roof broadly extends
over a cantilevered concrete deck. The roof is clad
in galvanized metal and structured in mahogany with
stainless steel supports that figure as masts and
stays.
An L shaped concrete wall on the north side of
the building forms a bulkhead between the beach
and the road providing privacy for a landscaped
patio and swimming pool. For additional privacy
and aroma, mahogany trellises supporting climbing
jasmine extend from the wall.
We created the cabin itself from a mahogany liner
that makes the floor and a storage wall containing
a king sized bed (surrounded by a mesh tent), the
galley kitchen, head, stereo, and bar. When the
pavilion is not in use these elements fold or slide
back into the storage wall.
A swinging day bed is suspended from the roof stay
over the forward deck. This pavilion is a place
for simple relaxation under the warm sun with gentle
breezes. |
